Eric Ishimaru, Director of Music Ministries

Eric was born in San Fransisco and grew up in the Bay area. His family moved to southern California during his college years. He graduated from Cal. State Long Beach with a Bachelor of Music degree in choral and vocal  music. After obtaining his teaching credential he went to work at Montebello High School as a music specialist for one year. In 1987 he earned on his Master’s degree in music (piano) at Northern Arizona University while serving as an accompianist and leading Bible studies at NAU.

From 1987-1992, after sensing a call from God to be in ministry, he attended Fuller Theological Seminary (they same school I graduated from in 1993) in Pasadena, CA. During that time he attended and worked at Emmanuel Reformed Church (RCA) where he met his wife Beverly. During his time in seminary he cared for his ailing father. He was ordained into the Reformed Church in America in Dec. of ’92, and married in July of ’93.

From ’92-’95 he served at Bethel Reformed in Bellflower, CA as an associate Pastor focusing in the areas of youth, college and music ministries. In 1995 he and Bev moved to Denver, CO where he served as the founding Pastor of a church-plant called Harvest Christian Community. In 2002 Eric struggled with a moral failure and ended up resigning his position in the church and walking through a time of repentance,  forgiveness, healing and restoration. For the next three years he worked for Safeway Foods.

In 2005, the RCA reinstated Eric as a pastor in good standing and he was hired as a part-time Director of Music at an ELCA church in the Denver area. When they learned that he could not fully embrace the liberal direction of the church he was let go. In 2006 he was hired by a LC-MS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) church as the Director of Music. He enjoyed his time of service to that church and felt supportive of their mission and ministry. In 2007 he was called to serve as the Pastor of Worship and Discipleship at Bridgeway Church here in Ames. Because of budgetary constraints Eric was let go by the leadership earlier this year. Recently he was hired by Sauer-Danfoss to work on the line. Eric enjoys hiking in the mountains of CO, reading books about the early Church fathers, good movies, good food and good wine.
